Thanksgiving Weekend

On Wednesday afternoon, I hopped in the car and headed up to my parents for the long weekend. Holly was already there, as we had gone up the weekend before Thanksgiving, too. When I walked into the house, Holly and Nana were making pumpkin pies. I actually came in, set my stuff down, took my coat off, and snuck up on Holly before she even realized that I was there!
My dad had seen me before Nana & Holly did, so he took my camera from me and took a picture of Holly's reaction when she finally realized I was there.
I got a huge hug, but then Holly went back to doing what she was there for: to make pies!
The day before, Holly had helped her Nana make the cornbread dressing and the pecan pie, too. She had also been out to the chicken coop every single day looking for eggs.
I can't remember if it was Thanksgiving day, or the day after, but I put Holly down for her nap as usual. When she woke up, she came downstairs and very proudly announced that she had found a binkie under the bed before she had gone to sleep! She said she bonked her head on the bed getting to it, but used it during her nap and wanted to keep it after she woke up.
She made all kinds of funny faces with her binkie in her mouth!
Some days Holly is super cooperative about her hair. She's willing to have it combed, braided, put in one ponytail, or two. Other days, she's not so cooperative. She still has to have her hair done, though! Sometimes in just turns out more like in the picture below - very crooked! Oh, well, what do you do?
I think it may have been Thursday night that Holly had a complete meltdown and cried herself to sleep. She looked so darned cute, though!
On Friday night, we went to Coeur d'Alene to the holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony. I wanted to go to the "North Pole," too, but we will wait and do that right before Christmas. Holly was so, so excited about the parade. I forgot her gloves, and kept trying to get Holly to keep her hood on, but it didn't work. She was cold, but happy the entire time.
One store that had a float in the parade was the comic store. Spiderman, Superman, and Batman all handed out free comics along the parade route. Holly "read" hers while we were waiting for the fireworks to start. She also ate both candy canes that she got during the parade.
Oh, my smiley girl! The guy next to her appeared grumpy in general, but had to smile when Holly would yell "Look! They're coming! Do you see the ____? (horses, dogs, Santa, band, etc., etc.)"
My pictures didn't turn out great because I forgot to change the settings to nighttime, but I got a couple of good ones of the Veterans' float and a couple of other things. I just wish the one with the cement mixer covered in Christmas lights had turned out! That is soooo North Idaho!

Holly especially liked the horse drawn carriage and also the animal shelter float with all the dogs on it.
After all the annoying speeches and singing Silent Night, the fireworks finally started. After that, all of the trees, buildings, and other decorations were lit up. They will stay lit through New Years. Its so pretty and it can't help but make you happy!
We got a picture of the two of us for a change, too!
On Saturday evening, we went to a neighbor's house to shoot some pool in the Man Cave they have. Holly played ping pong with Nana & Sue, and also had a lot of fun with the golf balls in the practice putting green. She kept herself busy for the two hours we were there, even though it was after her bedtime.
She also enjoyed the raspberry dessert that Sue made, too. It took her a while to decide to eat it, but when she finally decided to, she inhaled it! If you noticed my comment on FB last night, this is also when she guzzled half of my diet Dr. Pepper and stayed up until about 11:30 last night!
We had an absolutely fabulous time, as usual! We even got some Christmas decorating done when we got home. As I was putting the lights up in the windows, Holly would say "Oh my gosh! That's so cute! I love it, Mom! You are doing such a good job!" It was like having my own personal cheer squad for putting up Christmas decorations. I spent a lot of the time laughing as I was putting up the lights. Tomorrow, the plan is to decorate the tree together after school. Let's hope I have lots of energy and motivation!

One Strange Day

Holly woke up today and pulled the thinnest, short sleeved t-shirt out of her drawer that she owns, insisting on wearing only this one. I had to smile because it brought back lots of great memories for me of our trip to Vietnam. This is one of several t-shirts that I bought for her there, but it is the first one that she actually fits in (somewhat, anyway!).
Because it was so cold today, I also made her wear a fuzzy, warm sweatshirt over the t-shirt, even though I knew it would come off within moments of dropping her off at daycare. She insisted on the hood being up! It was non-negotiable in her world.
There are occasional nights when I put Holly to bed where she goes nuts about sleeping in her own bed. Its not the usual "I don't want to go to sleep because I'm having too much fun" or "I just really want to sleep with you tonight" kind of two-year-old craziness. Its hysterical sobbing about sleeping in my bed. I can't ever figure out what's going on in that little head of hers when it happens, but trust me when I say its just plain easier to put her to bed in my bed, then move her to her own when I want to go to sleep. She's always asleep within minutes when I put her in my bed.
And tonight she was snoring louder than the cat does! I could hear her outside the door before I ever walked into the bedroom. (I'm sure she will be pleased as punch when she's a teenager and realizes that I announced this publicly for all of cyberspace to read!)
Usually by the time I get Holly home at the end of the day she is a little tired and somewhat cranky for the entire evening. Today she was so happy, cheerful, and funny. She ate more dumplings in one sitting than I have ever seen her eat (7 in case you are wondering), and even decided to go potty all by herself without even telling me she needed to go. And I mean ALL by herself - pants off, diaper off, up on the big potty before I even realized things were too quiet down the hallway! Hooray!!! That is cause for celebration for sure!
At the end of the day, I love seeing my sweet little angel sleeping so peacefully in her Mama's bed!
Oh, I am so thankful! My world is overflowing with happiness to have Holly in my life!

Family Day 2009

I think its pretty convenient that Family Day is the day after Veterans Day, a national holiday that I don't have to work on. Yesterday morning, I took Holly to Spokane for her seasonal flu shot, and then had planned to take her to the children's museum or some other fun activity. She asleep on the way there, so I drove further and went to her favorite restaurant instead. Her timing for waking up was perfect (as I was pulling in the parking lot!) and she was so excited to be eating at Panda Express. She had her usual rice & potstickers.
When we got home, she took a nap and then we made some special treats together for her to take to daycare today. (Here's a really good blog post where I got the idea for these.) We've been talking a lot about Family Day, what it is and why we celebrate it. I knew some of her friends at daycare would ask, so we practiced her answers a bit. She must have been getting sick of it because when I asked her "What are we celebrating tomorrow?" she said "I don't know," and made this gesture.
When I told her we were celebrating Family Day, she acted like it was a brand new idea to be excited about. She gasped and put her hands over her mouth in surprise. What a crack up!
Holly was so happy to get to help me make her treats. She loves to stand on the stool and do things like squish the bread, take candy out of the dish, and give me a heart attack because I worry that she will touch the hot stove.
She did a really good job of following directions and knew exactly what to do after I explained it once. Here she is putting the cake into the candy molds.
And then patiently waiting for 10 minutes while they were in the freezer so that we could start all over again.
While it took a while to do, since I was dumb enough to use a candy mold with only 4 candy holes, we had a lot of fun and they turned out pretty good. Not all of them looked this good, but these were the ones Holly took to daycare today.
I also didn't realize how many of them the recipe made. I'm thinking that we will be visiting some friends after dinner tonight to share the wealth! Of course, Holly & I both had to sample the treats before bed.
This morning, Holly woke up early and opened her presents that I bought for her in Taiwan. I bought something to give her every year until she turns 18.
Surprise, surprise, its a puzzle of numbers in Mandarin & English. (Thanks Jeff & Abby for the great idea!)
And another one of Taiwan!
After she ate and got dressed, she got to play with her puzzle for a bit before we left for the day. She also made a bee line to it this afternoon when we got home.
When I told her it was time to go to daycare, she yelled "Yeah! Family Day!" and out the door we went. She got to help hand out her treats at daycare and told everyone what they were for.

Holly & Mama both had a great two days celebrating Family Day. Its nice to know that I will always have the day off before our special day so that we can spend some quality time every single year celebrating a very important day in our lives! And we will always be sending a special prayer for her birth family in Taiwan.

Two Years Ago

Dear Holly,

It was two years ago today that I held you in my arms for the very first time. I had already fallen completely in love with your pictures, but there are no words to describe holding you for the first time and knowing that you were my daughter forever. I had dreamed of you and wanted you for such a long time and it was finally a reality.
Every single day, I wake up and am so thankful that you are my child. I go to bed with a smile on my face because I have you in my life. You make me so happy and make my life complete! Never for a minute should you think you were unwanted or unloved because you ARE wanted and ARE loved every single day! I am the luckiest person on earth to be your mom! Thanks for being my daughter.
I love you sweet girl,
Mama

Pictures That Make Me Smile

Holly had turned into the crazy girl who gives me the camera, turns her back when I turn it on, and says "Cheese!" while refusing to have her picture taken. As a result, there are very few good pictures to post anymore. I hope this is a phase and not a permanent thing!

Even from the back, she takes a cute picture, doesn't she?
I'm sure this was an accident on her part - to let me actually snap the picture, that is! As you will see, Holly is on the coffee table in about half of these pictures. What can you do?
Heading out the door for daycare.
We had a half day on Friday after completing parent/teacher conferences this week. I went up to my parents Friday afternoon, even though they are on a cruise through the Panama Canal right now (can envy be transmitted in a blog post?). I went to pick up some beef that we had ordered a while ago. I got my parents' beef put in their freezer and brought mine home Saturday morning. Here is a picture of Holly as we were leaving town of Friday. She was asleep before we even got to the freeway on ramp!
Holly likes to play a game where she stands on the coffee table, and I say "up" or "down" while she either squats down like a frog or stands up high. Fortunately, she doesn't jump on the coffee table! This is her new favorite game, so its a good time to take some pictures.
Not always great pictures, but at least you can tell how much fun she is having.
Shortly after this picture, Holly said "Hug, Mom," and then told me "You are my best friend." This is her new favorite thing to say, and it always puts a smile on my face! I hope she's still saying the same thing when she is a teenager. I love my big girl!

Trick or Treat Pictures

After I gave up on Holly ever taking a nap today, I got her ready for trick or treating. I took her outside to take a picture of her with the pumpkins, but it was tough to get a good one.
Actually, she would only let me take three of them, so there weren't any good ones!
Holly was so excited to go trick or treating! She kept telling me to "Come on! Let's go!" She also told me she was going to "spell" me with her wand. So cute!
The first thing we did was to go to the fire station, where they have a chili feed for the community. I had a chili dog. Holly would only eat saltine crackers and juice.
I wanted to get a few pictures or Holly with her friends, but first G said no to a picture. Her mom finally talked her into standing with Holly, then Holly didn't want to stand with G. Here are the two unhappy girls.
And just a smidge happier. Gotta take what you can get!
We went out front to take some pictures of the kids together. Holly was ready to go trick or treating, running in circles around people.
We finally got a few of the kids rounded up and standing in front of one of the fire trucks. This is such a great event that the fire department does. It gets people to the fire station, and its nice not to have to cook before going out trick or treating.
Mom, let's go, I said!
One of our friends asked Holly come inside so she could take her picture. She asked all of her favorite buddies for their pictures. So sweet!
Its a good thing Holly has such nice friends. Her candy bucket broke again; I've already glued the handle and gave it a band aid to keep it together. When we were at L's house, his mom & dad suggested we borrow his bucket to finish our trick or treating. That was a great suggestion! If I lived closer to the city, I would buy a new one on clearance for next year. Oh, well!

Holly had a fantastic time tonight! She was very good about saying thank you, and it was pretty warm for Halloween. Since I was pushing her in the stroller, I was able to just wear a t-shirt. Once we got home, she was starving - crackers don't last long in a small tummy like hers! She had some noodles, then got to eat some Skittles before going to bed. Hope she sleeps in since we fall back an hour tonight.

I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween and had as much fun trick or treating as we did!

Getting Ready for Halloween

Last weekend we went up to my parents house. I knew we needed to go up because it would be the last weekend for a while that we would be able to see them. They left today for San Diego to get on a cruise ship tomorrow. They will be going though the Panama Canal, then spending a couple of days in Puerto Rico before coming home.

We all went to church together last Sunday. My dad does sound every other week, so we had to be there a little early. The rest of us headed for the nursery so that Holly could play. She loved the little house and spent some time playing peek-a-boo with us through the window.
She had lots of fun opening and closing the window shutters.
And doing all the puzzles, of course! I wish I had gotten a decent picture of her in her dress that I made. Its got some lace and lots of sparklies, both in the fabric and the buttons on it. So, so cute!
Holly also spent a little time yesterday in her fairy princess outfit that she is wearing for Halloween. I wanted to see how she would do with the head piece. She loved the whole thing and spent most of her time trying to keep Salem away from the long strings on the wand and her head piece. She is looking forward to wearing it tonight!
This is my favorite picture of her recently!
We also finally got the pumpkins carved. I couldn't decide if we should color them with markers, paint them, or carve them. I finally settled on the old traditional standby, carving. The thing that irritates me most about the carving kits you get is that every single year the pokey thingy breaks and you have to buy a new one. Hasn't anyone ever thought that if you make the pokey thingy out of metal instead of plastic, they would last longer?!
I have to say that I have never really been any good at decorating for holidays. Mostly only Christmas, even though I know I need to get better about all the holidays since I have a little kid who will think its important once she figures out that there are constantly holidays! I wish I could just pay someone to come out up and take down decorations...
Anyway, here is the extent of my Halloween decorating. I would like to point out that the witch I got as a gift a couple of years ago, and it doesn't ever move from that spot.

We went grocery & clothes shopping in Spokane this morning, then I was hoping that Holly would take a good long nap once we got home. No chance! Why is it that the days that we really need them to take a nap - exciting days like Halloween - that they decide not to take one at all? What's that all about? I am glad that we got Holly lots of new clothes today, almost all on sale!

I will be sure to get lots of pictures of Holly later tonight while we are trick or treating. We have been practicing what she is supposed to say and when, but it remains to be seen whether she will actually do it! She does have a mind of her own.
